About Us Long Beach Firemen's Memorial Association was formed many years ago, and incorporated in May of 1954. The primary purpose was to encourage the interest of our community in the firemen that serve them and to bring our firemen together for social, recreational, educational and fraternal activities. In addition, the association served the interests of our firemen, fostered and encouraged sportsmanship, promoted camaraderie, and promoted good will between firemen, their families, and the community.
The following years were focused on establishing an Annual Firemen's Ball and raising monies to build a place to gather known at the time as the Clubhouse. This Clubhouse was founded between 1954 and 1955, at the address 3295 Pacific Avenue. The annual ball was unsuccessful from a limited amount of input and very little profit. Therefore, the ball was discontinued after the 1957 ball. This led us to our first Circus and Fireworks show 1958. During 1963 we sold the clubhouse. 5 years later we began sponsoring the Annual Picnic. The picnic is still present today with many of members and their families attending. In 1976, the Fireworks Show had been struggling to maintain funding to keep it as one of the main Association events. This led the association to bring back the Firemen's Ball. The Fireman's Ball was bringing some funding to the Association, which led to a purchase of micro-wave ovens for headquarters and all fire stations in the city during 1977. |
